Forever Friends in Spirit. Puppy Picasso & Frankie the Walk ‘N Roll Dog. A Book Review & Remembrance.

It’s like Dee Dee Murry and her dog Hallie, and me and my dog, Frankie, lived parallel lives.

While my dachshund, Frankie, became paralyzed and was ultimately fitted for a custom dog wheelchair, and learned to move through the world in a new way, and became known as Frankie, the Walk ‘N Roll Dog, Hallie became blind and learned to navigate the world in her own unique way too and would become a star in her own right also and become known as Puppy Picasso.

Standing beside these two pint-sized dogs were two women— each determined to do whatever they could to help their furry companions live a quality of life. From that, each found a purpose and a calling they couldn’t deny. All four would ultimately positively affect the lives of thousands of others through the sharing of their stories to inspire and encourage young and old through difficult times.

When Dee Dee contacted me asking if I’d consider reviewing the book she was writing to share the story of Hallie— Puppy Picasso the true story of a little blind dog who could paint— I was beyond honored. The journey we each walked separately with our pups, but together in a bond that will never be broken, was something I wasn’t about to turn away from.

I knew reading Hallie’s story would bring back memories of my life with Frankie and would likely cause some tears to be shed, but I also knew that I’d likely be reminded of the joy, rewards, and love that can be encountered when we open to see our challenges in a positive way through the eyes of our animal friends.

And I wasn’t wrong. There were tears mixed in with smiles and giggles, but most of all, a depth of connection and understanding that I had relating to what Dee Dee and Hallie went through and how it ultimately and profoundly changed both their lives for the better.

The love between a human and a pet is an extraordinary experience that has the potential to change one’s life in unimaginable ways. Such is the deeply enriching and touching story of Hallie, the blind dachshund who learns to paint, and her devoted human and artistic mom, Dee Dee. Their story of triumph in the face of adversity will open a tender place in your heart. Not only do they each flourish despite obstacles, but they find a way in which to give back to dogs in need, and forever and positively change the lives of countless others—both canine and human. There is nothing the human spirit can’t do with a furry friend as your guide and champion!

The Tiny Twig Talisman Story and the Artist Who Created Them.

The artist, Sandi, who created this Tiny Twig Talisman, is someone I recently learned about from another artist — and all because of a serendipity connection on Instagram.

Sandi’s IG page is called Bluebird Cottage. Well, you know me! Anything related to cottage and I’m going to want to know more! I would come to learn more about Sandi from her artist friend, Lille Diane and who just happens to also love something else just as much as I do — donkeys!

I’d discover through Lille Diane that Sandi was featured in the May/June/July 2020 issue of In Her Studio — one of my favorite magazines. How did I miss that? A little research, a gently used copy found on eBay, and well, now I feel like I’ve connected with another kindred spirit in Sandi (and Lille Diane, too!)

Sandi has a lovely bohemian-style art studio with lots of happy and bright colors as featured in the pages of the magazine. Her Esty shop is called, Love From Cape Cod. Swoon! I’ve often wanted to visit Cape Cod since falling in love with it through the pages of the author, Susan Branch’s memoir, Martha’s Vineyard – Isle of Dreams (which I’ve read at least ten times now. I’m not kidding!)

So back to Sandi. Her posts on IG always bring me so much joy and her love of home, art, and nature feel so in alignment with mine. When she posted her newest creations (Tiny Twig Talismans) and the story behind them, well I knew I just had to have one to add to my altar in Joyful Pause Cottage.

From Sandi’s IG page:

Tiny Twig Talismans. Created with much love over many months. The story behind these is…. Three years ago my favorite tree in the front blew down in a blizzard. I loved that tree and was heartbroken to actually see it come down in the high winds across the driveway. Before the tree crew came to cut up and haul away the broken parts I went out and gathered many of the smaller branches. Some are in a large vase in the loft and greet me every time I go to my studio. Other tiny twigs wait for me to lovingly create these precious talismans. They have the sweetest energy and I loved creating them. Do you love trees too?

When the package arrived containing my sweet little twig of the tree that Sandi so lovingly found a way to commemorate into these beautiful works of art, I should have known how it arrived would be first-class too.

The Tiny Twig was wrapped inside this blue bedazzled tissue and then tucked inside the brown paper with lovely calligraphy written on it and a floral sticker which came inside the envelope with floral washi tape taped to the front.

Included inside was this beautiful envelope and colorful and sweet card. It was many gifts in one and unwrapping it all felt so very magical!

For many years now I’ve truly enjoyed every time I can support an artist. When I do, I feel like not only do I honor them, but I also honor a part of myself that loves to create too. You aren’t just getting an item, but something that comes from the heart, soul, and the hands of the many hours of joy that go into creating by the artist. Talk about good vibes to have in any space and exactly what I surround myself with in Joyful Pause Cottage!

So, welcome Tiny Twig to my space, and thank you, Sandi, for following your artistic whims and dreams…

Bird Haven Expansion

It wasn’t what I thought the noise was all about Sunday morning. The saw was buzzing and John was in full work mode. I thought for sure he was cutting something for the new home he is building for a client. A part of me let out a sigh.

Spring, summer, and fall is the busiest season for anyone in construction. Sometimes I can feel lonely with John’s schedule so full. While at the same time I feel blessed that he has work and that he loves what he does.

So I kept busy in the kitchen cooking up the meal for dinner, which I often like to have prepped ahead of time on the weekends so we can enjoy time out on the deck come early evening.

Just as I finished making the casserole John popped up outside the screen door with a big grin and holding a birdhouse. My thought had been wrong. Here he was making another birdhouse for our bird haven that continues to expand each year.

Seems someone besides me has caught bird fever.  🙂

As I write this post he is whipping out yet another birdhouse. He had asked me where we might have room for another one. I said I wasn’t sure, but that we could walk around the yard to check it out. But he opted for just going ahead and making another one. I’m sure we will find somewhere to put it. No doubt.

Lucky birds. Lucky me. Blessed us. Suddenly I no longer feel so lonely.
