How Dragonflies Came to Grace the Door of Our New Rig

It feels like many moons ago. The times we visited my mom and her husband, David, while they wintered in Florida. First, on a boat in a marina with adventures out into the water, and after they sold the boat, to then their home with a lovely lanai and a swimming pool. Never having learned how to swim, I’d hover near to the edge of the pool and enjoyed the buoyancy while also feeling safe.

My mom and her husband would eventually sell their home in Florida and travel by motorhome. But by that time I had a special needs dachshund to care for so we didn’t venture out as much anymore.

David passed away a little over eight years ago and the memoires of their travels are what my mom often speaks of and something I enjoy hearing. So when we upgraded from our R-pod to our new-to-us motorhome I could hardly wait for her to see it.

With our past adventures in our R-pod I’ve always made it a point to send my mom a quick note when we’ve landed at each of our destinations along our travels. While I know she enjoys vicariously traveling through us, I also know her ‘mom hat’ is always on, which means she feels much better when she knows all is well. On a side note: I sometimes think about the day I won’t have her to check in with so I appreciate even more with each passing year that someone is concerned about our whereabouts.

A few Saturdays ago was the day she’d finally come see the motorhome we bought. Stepping inside, her smile and ooo’s and ahhh’s were evident that she liked it as she also expressed how happy she was for John and I.

After pouring us each a glass of cold tea in wine glasses, because after all we were celebrating, my mom continued to comment about how much she liked our new rig. At one point she said, “I wish I could be a fly, no, a mouse, no, a dragonfly, and go with you!”

I knew right when she said that what I wanted to do. When we bought the motorhome the previous owners had a decal of palm trees on the door. It wasn’t my taste, but I didn’t know what I’d replace it with. But now I knew the perfect thing! Dragonflies, of course!

I decided on three. The top colorful dragonfly represents my mom, while the green and yellow one represents John, and yup, you likely guessed it by now, the pink and yellow one is me.

For me, Dragonfly has always exuded such grace. It’s also how I see my mom. Watching a dragonfly glide along the top of the water it’s such a wonder and how they do it so gracefully and with so much ease. After sharing the photo above with my mom and the reason I chose Dragonflies for the door she looked up the spiritual meaning of Dragonfly and sent me this:

Dragonfly represents good luck and fortune, focus , abundance, intuition, “taking a leap of faith”, achievement, freedom, wealth and patience.

Taking a leap of faith jumped out at me as that is definitely what we did when we decided to purchase this motorhome. I wrote about it on my blog here if you want to check that out in case you missed it.

So much more I could say, but I’m going to leave it at this and end with the fact that it really couldn’t be more fitting to have our new-to-us rig’s theme be that of Dragonfly.

May it, and we, fly with grace and ease when we take the rig out on an adventure!
