Have Van Will Travel Journal: Did He Really Just Cut a Hole in the Roof?

Another installment of our journey converting a 2009 Chevy van into a camper.

I hope you are all enjoying a wonderful Labor Day weekend. It is absolutely gorgeous here in Wisconsin this holiday. The sun is warm, there’s a hint of fall tickling my senses, and the cicada’s are singing their song.

And today is the day John cut a hole in the roof of the van! Scary stuff!  But alas, he’s a pro and after many videos he watched and articles read on line, he took the plunge. The hole was cut to accommodate the Coleman Mach 8 air conditioner that will sit on top of the van (it is low and inconspicuous – not a large, boxy one you see on top of some commercial trucks). The next hole John will cut is for the Fan-Tastic vent roof fan. We discovered that the Fan-Tastic fan is the “go-to” for this type of thing and nothing else beats it. It brings in fresh air and takes out the stale. Gotta have that in 84 sq. ft. with two people and two dogs, that is for sure.

After this is done he will begin insulation of the inside. This is all so exciting that it’s hard to keep my patience in check as I just can’t wait to see it done!  And I’m not the only one who has to practice patience. Doesn’t this photo below look like Gidget is saying, “Aren’t you done yet papa? I want to go on vacation!”

Well gotta run — I think I hear John calling me — time to lift the A/C onto the roof of the van. Wish me luck!

P.S.  Stay tuned to meet our mascots that I ordered for our van. They are SO CUTE!  You knew of course that our van, which we have named “Second Chance” had to have mascots too, right?  🙂

Happy Birthday to My Special Sparrow, John

Happy Birthday to My Special Sparrow, John

Happy 57th Birthday to the other half of this sparrow duo – my sweet, hardworking, loving guy, John.

When I awoke this morning I thought of John right away and the song “Two Sparrows in a Hurricane” by Tanya Tucker popped in my head. It had me reminiscing back to the day John stole the keys to my heart, as a line in the song says. I was only 15 1/2. And yes, we had a head “full of dreams and faith that could move anything” and we still do. Cue the music!

Often in our almost 38-years together we have thought of ourselves as the two sparrows in this song – especially through the rough times – but somehow when things seemed against us, we knew we would make it. Perhaps maybe not at the beginning, but our faith has definitely grown stronger over the years. I guess you could say we’ve adopted this as “our song.” And yes, we’ve slow danced to this song in the kitchen many a times and I hope many more times.

I could see in my mind as I lay in bed this morning that adorable nineteen year old face with the piercing blue eyes, and longish hair curled over his blue jacket, which he loved to refer as his “cop jacket.” Oh how he made my heart go pitter-patter, pitter-patter, when I saw him walking the halls when I was a sophomore and he was a senior.

My heart still goes pitter-patter for him, but in a different way – an evolving, beautiful way for a man I deeply love, admire, and find such comfort in his loving arms.

I truly couldn’t ask for a better partner and just wish I could have him physically sit inside my heart so he could feel the love I have for him that is just too hard to put into words.

But I guess he will just have to believe me when I say he is my soulmate and I love him so very much. I kind of think he will.  wink

Every book I’ve ever written a faithful dachshund has been right beside me…first Frankie, then Joie, and now Gidget. As I finish up production of Wisdom Found in the Pause – Joie’s Gift tying together all the many different parts to bring you a special edition gift package soon, I had to take a moment and hug my little Miss G, and thank her for being my steadfast, patient friend. How could I not stop what I was doing and give this face a smooch, right?

Best writing tool this writing girl could ever ask for! I highly recommend one for every writer!
