The Fairies that Came in the Night

The Fairies that Came in the Night

I heard the whistle of a teapot and the smell of coffee brewing. But it wasn’t coming from inside my home this morning. Perplexed, scratching my head, I then thought I heard the faint sound of giggles.

What could it be? I wondered.

I quickly dismissed it thinking it was just my imagination. It was time to get on with my day and the garden hoses needed to be turned on to give the shrubs and flowers their special blend of java for the day.

As I opened the front door, I swore I could smell the sweet scent of bacon — it made the inside of my nose do a little happy dance.  And again, I heard the sweetest giggles. I must be losing my mind, I thought.

As I stepped into my gardens I inwardly let out a squeal of delight realizing I indeed was not losing my mind!  There were camps of Fairy houses scattered here, there and everywhere. That was it!

They must have come in the dark of night with the moon lighting their way, the tiny caravan, and quietly set up their villages of campers, vans, and tents — and they were having a grand ole time as they giggled and chattered among themselves cooking up a breakfast feast.

Trying not to be seen, I quietly and most lightly tip-toed among the wee villages taking great delight in my new friends that had come in the night — the fairies who sent shivers of magic down my spine.

Oh dear, I thought again, my mind is working overtime. I scolded myself that fairies really don’t exist. You silly girl!

And just then, swathed in a silk lavender scarf around her wee body, her wings glistening with sparkles from the sun, a rose in her auburn hair, she ever so gently landed on my shoulder and said in the most dreamy voice, I’m here to remind you that you are one of us. Don’t ever forget that the magic lives in within you and that your imagination is the key to all the places you can go whenever you want to. Take joy, be joy and watch the sparks of magic make their way out into the world to land where they may  — so others will come to know us also — and when they find trust and faith in us — they will surely find it within themselves too.

And with a sprinkle of pink fairy dust she left in her wake and flew down back to her tiny village I knew without a shadow of doubt that my soul was just given a gift of what is real if we wish it to be.

You Can Let the Art in Your Heart Lead the Way. Meet My Friend, Shannon.

You Can Let the Art in Your Heart Lead the Way. Meet My Friend, Shannon.
Shannon in front of one of her new paintings in progress posing with the She Shed book she won from me!

I want to tell you about a dear lady, my friend, Shannon who has grown by leaps and bounds right before my eyes the past few years. She is living from that place in her heart, that so many want to find the courage to do so also. She is letting art be the balm for her soul that fills her with joy and purpose.

She is also the lucky lady who won the book giveaway of She Sheds – A Treasure Trove of Women’s Creative Spaces.  I always use Random.org when I pick a winner and while I wish everyone could win, I was very tickled that Shannon did. Not only does she live five minutes from me and I could get a picture of her with the book I signed for her (and it’s why it took me a bit to announce the winner), but I really think she was meant to win this copy! Like those that left a comment, Shannon would love a She Shed of her own to keep pursuing her art.

You see, I’ve known Shannon for a little over 25 years now. I first knew her mom when I worked at Kohl’s Department Store which was like, um, eons ago and this is how I met Shannon. Then John and I wanted to buy our first home a couple years after we’d been married. We ended up buying a spec home that Shannon’s husband, Bradd, and her father-in-law built. And over the years our friendship has grown, and ebbed and flowed.

She went on to have two children and as with most friends, being we didn’t have any, or lives drifted apart for awhile as she raised her kids. Shannon’s daughter will be in her third year of art school come this fall and her son will head to college in the fall also.

When her daughter was getting ready to graduate high school Shannon had the upheaval of emotions so many mom’s go through. She wondered, Now what? Who am I as my children to go out into the world on their own? And she was asking herself, what’s my purpose?

And with a little searching and being open to possibility, along with giving herself permission to follow her heart, Shannon began to paint and realized how much she loves it. And might I add here, she is really good at it!!

Shannon’s art table of supplies. One happy corner of her world.

It’s truly been a joy watching Shannon spread her art wings! And how lovely its been to support her by encouraging her and seeing so many others who stop by her personal page to “like” and comment on her work. Check out these two squirrels she recently painted.

And she keeps putting one foot in front of the other, sometimes her knees knocking and her nerves jumping, but she continues to paint. And this week, she will be taking a few pieces of her work to a shop to sell, which as many of you know, is a big, big step. I’m SO proud of her!!

Shannon would love a “She Shed” of her own someday, but the cool thing is, she hasn’t let that stop her from doing her art as often as she can. She has set up a little corner for herself in the lower level of her home. She has a beautiful view of trees outside the window, and where her sweet, dear, dog Molly is resting in peace with a marked grave.

And I think this quote on the back of this chair she painted below says it best. Because I believe too that when we answer that inner calling that is there nudging us along, can we then begin to walk peacefully on this earth.

Keep painting Shannon — you are creating your own special miracles just by letting that inner light in you shine and move out into the world.

“She Shed” Book Giveaway! Plus a Special Gift for You!

"She Shed" Book Giveaway! Plus a Special Gift for You!

I’m excited to be able to give away a signed (by me!) copy of this new book She Shed – A Treasure Trove of Women’s Creative Spaces.  There is good news and bad news about this book though that I must share.

The good news is that my story about my Zen Writing Cottage is featured on pages 42-46. This is such a lovely, inspiring book and I am very honored to have my special space showcased inside the pages among other wonderful women following their hearts — five of which are from the US. And might I add, some very darling little She Sheds?

The bad news is that I’m not able to get copies here to the US to offer to those of you that expressed interest. I’m so sorry. The publisher is out of Australia and what I didn’t realize at the time when I agreed to do this (though I’m still glad I did!) is:

A.)  It would cost a lot of money to have copies shipped here (Australia is FAR AWAY!) which made it cost prohibitive. After many calculations and avenues checked for shipping I’d end up losing $7 a book to offer them for sale on my website.

B.) The publisher won’t be offering the book for sale on Amazon. This is a whole other subject regarding small publishers and authors and Amazon, which continues to be a catch-22 situation. This has left some publishers not taking part in the Amazon channel. You might at some point be able to get a copy via Amazon as some do slip through – though in speaking with the publisher they said it will likely be very limited quantities.

And I let out a heavy sigh and was so disappointed. And I thought “what is a girl to do when she was so excited to share her passion about these darling little creative hubs and how hers came to be?”

And that brings me back to some more good news! I’m working on writing a longer version of my story to publish myself. I don’t yet know how long it will be or what format (e-book, PDF, or softcover), but I can tell you that I’ve begun work on it! I’m going to just let the writing take me where it needs to go and see what transpires with it.  So please do stay tuned!

And some more good news!  I want to inspire and encourage others to create a space of their own (if that is what you wish for!) so I’ve created this bookmark for all of you since there can only be one winner of the book giveaway. I hope you will enjoy!  Just click on the bookmark image below which will take you to the page on my website to print it out.

To enter for a chance to win a copy of the book all you have to do is leave a comment below and tell me what you would use a “She Shed” for, or if you already have one, do let me know what you use yours for as I’d LOVE to know!  Open to US residents only because again, due to shipping costs (thanks for understanding).

Also, please be sure when leaving a comment that I can link back to you or your email address so I can contact you if you are the winner!  Enter by midnight cst, Friday, June 10th. Sunday, June 12th at midnight cst. I’ll notify winner on Saturday., Monday! Good luck!

P.S.  You just might want to share this giveaway with your girlfriends – that way if one of them wins – you can read their copy when they are done!  😉
