Maui

Meet Maui! She is the 51st disabled dog the Frankie Wheelchair Fund had the honor of donating the funds to so she could begin life anew again.

She is currently with Dachshund Rescue of South Florida.

I’d say by the look of her stuffed toy friend, she has not wasted anytime getting around to the business of doing what dachshunds do best — and ripping (err, I mean loving) it with all her might.

I hope you will join me in wishing Maui a long, happy, fulfilling life with wheels as her chariot to carry her wherever she wants to go.

A rolling dog is a happy dog!

Maui’s wheels custom made my Eddie’s Wheels for Pets.

Thank you to Sarah of The Smoothe Store in being part of this donation to help Maui.

Alex Makes the 50th Dog Helped with a Dog Wheelchair!
Alex

We are doing a happy dance here at Joyful Paws headquarters!

Why?

Because Alex is the 50th dog the Frankie Wheelchair Fund has granted a wheelchair to!

Alex is currently with foster, Sandi, with Dachshund Rescue of South Florida. She sent me ths picture of Alex and said, “Here’s a pic of sweet n snugly Alex in his Eddie’s Wheels. He took to his wheels like a duck to water!”

Does not surprise me one bit. I’ve seen time and time again how these dogs get on with the joy of living life — now rolling through the grass, down the street, and over their human’s feet. Nothing stops them!

A very special thanks to Sarah of The Smoothe Store as the money she raised selling dog banandas last fall helped pay for Alex’s wheelchair which she donated to the Frankie Wheelchair Fund.

You can apply, donate, or learn more about the fund on our website, National Walk ‘N Roll Dog Day.

Keep on rolling Alex!

Gidget’s Workout (video) Showing Promise

Gidget's Workout (video) is Showing Promise
Gidget resting after her workout

As I mentioned last week on my blog a side effect to a drug Gidget is taking to help control her seizures, she developed ataxia (weakening of the hind legs).

We adjusted her med which has helped greatly with diminishing the other side effects she was experiencing. But walking on her hind legs isn’t coming around as easily.

So I got out Frankie’s wheelchair and have been doing mini walking sessions with her. It has been cold out, so we have taken to doing laps around downstairs where she has plenty of room to get around.

Today, without her wheels on, she has taken a few steps throughout the day on her own. YAY! I noticed this morning, for the first time in about a month, that she stood (though swaying a bit side-to-side) while she ate her breakfast. That was a welcome sign to see!

At night I do some physical therapy for her which I learned how to do when Frankie went down in 2006.

Between her wheelchair workouts and the PT she is showing promise.

A few times I’d thought about donating Frankie’s wheelchair, but so glad I kept it.

Thought you might enjoy seeing her progress so here’s a little video of her workout (and it’s so fun seeing her little personality again!) :
