Sleeping on the Job and She Sheds

sleeping on job and she sheds

John has been working from home on and off the last two weeks. Might seem unusual being he is a carpenter with his own General Contracting business.  Usually he has to go to someone’s home to do the work.

But now and then he gets a job where he can do the “prep” work at home. Our driveway right now is full of lumber which is starting to take shape into walls and a roof.

It brings back fond memories of when he was building my “she shed” which is better known as my zen writing cottage, back in 2007.  Hmm, looking at this picture, I see I still have the same SUV, but he has gotten two vans and sold the truck since then.  I say that in jest as I don’t mind. But I digress.

Seems this “she shed” craze has taken off as you may know from following my blog and all the press I’ve gotten about mine. Word is spreading around our area and John is currently building this garden shed for a customer. Isn’t it so quaint and lovely? And check out the July/August 2003 date on the magazine — this lady has been waiting a long time for her dream space!

After this is complete John will be building a 12 x 17 She Shed nearby for someone else. I think he’d be quite happy building these sweet spaces, rather like doll houses for grown up women, on a regular basis.  But then I may never get my driveway or the half of my garage back to park in!

At any rate, I love having him around the house. And Kylie is his helping buddy. Well, err, I see not. She seems to be sleeping on the job. But one can’t help but feel comforted when working hard and a dog snoozing nearby by wouldn’t you say?

Oh, Kylie: Outside Dog, Looking In

Oh Kylie: Outside Dog, Looking In
Kylie peeking into my writing cottage

I was so excited to get this shot of Kylie. I’ve tried before, but every time I’d reach for my camera she’d move away.

And goodness knows I’ve tried oodles of times to have her come inside my writing cottage.

Even propping the screen door open so she could come in at her leisure.

But every attempt has failed. Every. Single. Time. Sigh.

She just won’t come in.

Some fear that lurks in her mind that I’m not aware of always has her on the outside, looking in.

If only she knew how much I’d welcome her with open arms into my space. How I’d love to have her here with me.

And for goodness sake – she could even sit in my over- sized wicker chair if she wished.

I’d bring her tea. A good book to read. A pillow to lay her pretty head upon. A soft blanket to keep her warm on cold days.

And best of all I’d snuggle with her.

But it’s just not meant to be I suppose. So I admire her through the screen door sending her lots of love.

And maybe…. just maybe, someday she will surprise me and prance right in and sit beside me.

A dog loving girl can dream.

On a different note:  I just wanted to share with you that my writing cottage is featured in an article on ABC News by reporter Emily Shapiro of Good Morning America! Seems these ‘She Sheds’ are all the rage right now. Here is the link to take a look for yourself.

My “She Shed” a.k.a. my Zen Writing Cottage Featured on TODAY.com

techel_writing_cottage_outside_1_-_copy_07100d544dcb61f16071df1b39371062.today-inline-largeMy “Zen Writing Cottage” or the trend right now called, “She Sheds.”

It’s pretty exciting to be picked up and featured on Today.com – yup, The Today Show website! You can see my writing cottage featured here on their home page.

I was contacted last week by their Editor, Amy wanting to feature photos and stories of the latest craze called “she sheds.” She had come across my post titled, “How My She Shed Improved My Marriage.”

It’s kind of cute because I guess I was in trend way before there was even a trend with these fun and inviting places just for women, when John built mine in 2009.

I was inspired to have one after over two months of visiting my Life Coach, Diane, for my coaching sessions in 2005, at her lovely and endearing space above her garage overlooking Elkhart Lake (thank you, Diane!).

I hope my space inspires more women to carve out a place of their very own. Thank you, Amy and The Today Show!
