The Squirrel About Town!

On my morning walk, I watched as a squirrel carrying a chestnut in his mouth crossed the road to the baseball diamond on the highschool grounds.

He then proceeded to jump onto the bench behind the fence and sat there for a few moments. As if waiting for the beer vendor to come around and the game to start.

But alas, no game was scheduled for today.

As I continued my walk through town I discovered to my delight Squirrel was now sitting on the circular red picnic table outside the Vintage Elkhart Wine and Fine Food Shop. His treasured chestnut sitting on the table before him as he waited for, no doubt, a glass of fine wine to wash down the scrumptious chestnut.

But alas, the shop was not yet open which he soon realized, and he was on his way again.

As I made my daily loop through Cedar Community and just as I passed my mom’s house where I always say a silent, “Good morning, Mama. I love you!” there was Squirrel again just a few feet ahead of me.

I watched as he scurried down the driveway of friends of mine, Penny and Mark, and proceeded around the back to where they have a lovely patio where he was no doubt invited to have breakfast.

Arriving home it was about a half-hour later that I noticed Squirrel outside my front door. Busy as could be was he, burying that precious chestnut he’d carried all the way through town and then to my friend’s house. To only discover they’d prepared a feast for him and he need not have brought his own food.

Saving it for a rainy (or likely snowy!) day when he will need it most. And I am left with a treasured memory of the extra delight my walk was this morning and the story that ran through my head all because of Squirrel!
