Growing Trees – New Beginnings – by Cassy Tully
Saturday morning I spent a lovely morning visiting the first Farmer’s Market of the season with my friend, Cassy, as well as Joie’s first introduction to the market. Joie and I have some work to do in regards to being around other dogs. But other than that, it was a beautiful morning.
I tried to take a nap in the afternoon as I had not slept well the night before due to many new and exciting ideas floating through my mind. I also didn’t want to oversleep and miss when we needed to leave for a graduation party open house that began at 3:00 pm, and we planned to arrive around 4:00 pm.
Punctual as we usually are we arrived at the time we set out to. We were the first one’s there. Grandpa B. was grilling out brats and the graduate, Megan was sitting with her friend at a table set up in the garage. Sophee, the black and tan dachshund, and Molly, the bulldog greeted us.
Megan’s dad, Bradd asked what we’d like to drink. I wasn’t quite ready yet, so declined. John asked for a beer. I handed Megan the gift I brought for her, hoping she’d open it right away. I was excited about the print I got for her done by my friend Cassy who is an artist. Megan is going onto art school, so I hoped the print would inspire her.
She said, “Should I open it now?”
“Yes, I was hoping you would!” I said excitedly.
She loved the print. I said, “Show your mom!”
Bradd said she was inside cooking, along with Grandma B, so Megan and I headed for the door to the kitchen.
Megan showed her mom, Shannon. The personal message inscribed on the back by Cassy, along with the print, brought tears to Shannon’s eyes.
I hung out with Grandma B. and Shannon while they were cutting up fruit, cheese and sausage, and making side dishes. I found it a bit odd that they were first doing all the prep now as the party was a good hour underway. But we kept chatting away.
About 20-minutes later I said, “So how did Megan’s graduation go today?”
Just then Megan came into the kitchen.
Grandma B. looked a bit confused. She said, “Megan graduates tomorrow.”
I turned to Megan. “You mean I gave you your gift and you didn’t graduate yet? What if you don’t graduate? I’ll have to take back your gift.” I was, of course, just kidding.
Grandma B said, “Well, you are coming tomorrow aren’t you?”
“No, I wasn’t planning on it.” In my mind I thought she meant to the graduation ceremony.
Megan’s mom turned around and said, “Well, you RSVP’d that you were coming.”
Now I was confused. I said, “I did?”
All of a sudden it dawned on me and everyone else…. John and I were there on the wrong day! I thought the party was Saturday, but it was not until Sunday! We all laughed so hard and I felt my temperature go up about 100 degrees!
They never said a word wondering why, here we were, John and I, dressed up nicely for the party. They weren’t quite sure why we had stopped by, but went along with it. And the whole time I’m wondering why we were the only guests when the party began at 3:00 pm and they seemed not quite ready for the party!
It also made sense then why Megan seemed so perplexed when she asked if she should open her gift. It still makes me chuckle as I write this now thinking of how that all unfolded yesterday.
So… these things happen and you just gotta laugh at yourself when they do… and I just blamed it on my mentalpause symptoms of perimenopause. The bonus to all of this is I got a second date night out of it since we were all cleaned up and dressed nicely, might as well take advantage so out to dinner we went. Double bonus is I didn’t have to cook last night and I won’t have to cook tonight. Hmmmmm… I just might have to “try” this again another time.
And I’ll never bet you can guess where John and I will be at 4:oo pm TODAY! Grin. giggle. snort.
Ok, I double dog dare you to share one of your most embarrassing moments!
