To this day, witnessing a dog in a wheelchair, touches my heart in a deep and meaningful way on so many levels.

All this week we’ve been lighting up Facebook with inspiring photos of dogs in wheelchairs leading up to September 22nd, the official day of National Walk ‘N Roll Dog Day.

Frankie’s (the walk ‘n roll dog) legacy lives on with this special day celebrated every year  as a way in which we honor ALL dogs in wheelchairs around the world.

I’ll be talking about this special day, which I founded in 2012, on a local TV station, WFRV, Local 5 Live on Tues., Sept. 22nd between 9:20 and 9:45a.

If you can’t tune in live you can catch the recording here.  Gidget will be making an appearance also!

If there is one thing I believe in with all my heart it is that dogs in wheelchairs can live quality lives…and why it continues to be important to me to spread this positive message.

It’s truly a beautiful thing when others jump on the band wagon to support your mission.

Sarah of The Smoothe Store has done just that designing these bandana’s to show our love of our wheelie dog friends.

To date she has raised over $2,000 to help paralyzed dogs  with the money being donated to The Frankie Wheelchair Fund which grants wheelchairs to dogs in need.

Meet our first recipient that Sarah and her efforts is helping (which also makes it the 45th dog helped thru The Frankie Wheelchair Fund). Sammy’s wheelchair is currently being custom built by Eddie’s Wheels and she should be rolling soon. Stay tuned!

Sammy is currently in rescue with Dachshund Rescue of South Florida and is available for adoption.

A million thanks to you, Sarah!!

Savoring Last Moments.

Savoring Last Moments.
Gidget with some Geese friends

The Indian summer type day whispered in my ear all morning, “Come outside and play. Don’t waste a moment of the warm sun, brisk breeze, and soft light.  Come dance with me.”

And so I did, with Miss Gidget as my sidekick. I set my work aside for about 30 minutes, hopped on my bike and rode around our small town.

Stopping for a moment to converse silently with a flock of geese taking heed to the call of the day also.

The call to not miss a moment of it. To breathe it in, dance in the wind, feel the warmth of sunshine upon our faces, and hold it close, for they will become fewer as the days grow shorter.

I Was Reminded Today…

I Was Reminded Today...
Sweet Kylie

I was reminded today that I don’t need to check a calendar to know that a new season is on the cusp of blossoming into full view soon.

All I have to do is be aware of the signs from my animal friends.

Kylie was such reminder today.

Rarely, all summer, does she ever lie on our bed during the day.

But once fall is here, I find her there often.

I love coming in from my writing cottage to see her snuggled on top of our bedspread. I can never walk by without petting or hugging her, or as I most often do, give the side of her snout a smooch.

I had her in for her annual wellness exam yesterday. I noticed on Sunday, later in the day, she was limping on her front right leg. My vet took her outside to watch her walk and came back in to tell me Kylie has osteoarthritis in both her front knees.

She will be ten next month and in human years based on her breed and size, that is about 66.

Last night I watched a Youtube video on how to massage a dog who has arthritis and it was a sweet time between her and I as I took some time to do that for her.

Between Gidget and Kylie, I’ll have my hands full with massage appointments, but I don’t mind. I love to help them in this way.

And just as Kylie reminded me that fall is on its way, she also reminded me of precious time with our dear animal friends. I hug her just a little more tighter and closer as she moves through her senior years.
