Gidget Update: Living in the Moment

Gidget Update: Living in the Moment
Gidget Update: Living in the Moment

Today Gidget and I celebrate ninety days without her having a seizure. She is also just about back to walking on her own as she was before.

The potassium bromide rendered her back legs unable to work for a few weeks when I started her on it. But with the help of what was Frankie, and then Joie’s wheelchair, which became Gidget’s wheels, was good therapy to keep her muscles strong as the meds evened out in her system.

She still has her little trip up moments with her back legs criss-crossing or her little endearing wobbly walk – but that is how she was when I adopted her – so she is back to what we consider “normal” for her.

I understand that seizures can return at anytime, but it’s not what I try not to focus on. Instead I’m choosing to focus on all the good days she has had. And that she is back to her silly, playful, independent, endearing little self.

I soak it all in and tell her every chance I get how much I love her. There are no guarantees, this I know. But there are no guarantees no matter what and it’s just another lesson that living in the moment is all we have.

Kylie The Dog with A Huge Heart

Kylie The Dog with A Huge Heart
Kylie The Dog with A Huge Heart (and her pesty sidekick Gidget)

When I brought Gidget home from a rescue in Las Vegas, she hated being in a kennel. She’d chew apart any bedding or blanket that was inside and she practically flew out the end when I came home to let her out.

But Kylie’s kennel?  Well, that she loves. And Kylie, with such a huge heart lets Gidget be Gidget — which isn’t always easy to put up with when one said little dog who can be quite demanding at times for attention and having things her way (typical doxie style!).

Gidget goes in streaks where the minute Kylie is out of her kennel, she lets herself in. And then there are the times even if Kylie is in her safe, happy place in her kennel, well, no matter, Gidget barges in on her space.

Gidget does not seem to know her boundaries, but luckily for her, big yellow dog with a heart as huge as Texas, never seems to mind the intrusion.

I can’t say as I’d be the same. Boundaries are something I’ve worked hard on!

Maui

Meet Maui! She is the 51st disabled dog the Frankie Wheelchair Fund had the honor of donating the funds to so she could begin life anew again.

She is currently with Dachshund Rescue of South Florida.

I’d say by the look of her stuffed toy friend, she has not wasted anytime getting around to the business of doing what dachshunds do best — and ripping (err, I mean loving) it with all her might.

I hope you will join me in wishing Maui a long, happy, fulfilling life with wheels as her chariot to carry her wherever she wants to go.

A rolling dog is a happy dog!

Maui’s wheels custom made my Eddie’s Wheels for Pets.

Thank you to Sarah of The Smoothe Store in being part of this donation to help Maui.
