Learning Not To Judge- Turn it upside Down

Frankie the Walk ‘N Roll Dog wins 1st place in Dachshund Costume contest in 2008 at

GermanFest in Milwaukee, WI

As I perused Facebook this morning, I came across this photo above of Frankie on Everyone Loves a Dachshund Facebook page. I was so grateful for the fact that they shared the photo uninitiated by me, but also because it helps spread our positive message.  And here it is almost 4 years later and it has resurfaced.

As I read the comments (to date over 63- as well as this photo has been liked so far by over 450 people and shared over 130 times) there were about four negative comments… mostly that it was mean or cruel. My first reaction was to judge– “How could they say that,” I wondered? They don’t know me and don’t understand what a wonderful life Frankie leads. I had a lot of emotions bubble to the surface. All the good and positive comments were washed away because my heart hurt reading the negative ones. But then I caught myself.

I realized in that moment that I was being given another opportunity. An opportunity to educate those that may not understand. Those that don’t know how deeply I love this little dog– how I’ve poured my heart and soul into wanting to save other dogs being put to sleep through Frankie’s example– how I’ve worked tirelessly to encourage children to see their challenges as positive like Frankie does.

They didn’t know any better, I thought. They had no idea what this photo was all about. I could help them understand. So I set aside my hurt and judgment and shared my thoughts about the photo– as well as took the opportunity to educate about Intervertebral Disc Disease and dog wheelchairs.

They also say no press is bad press. I realized I was judging, caught myself, and said, “Frankie taught me not to judge.” Am I 100% good at this? No, I slip up now and then, but I will say I am much more aware and I try hard to be a better person.

So no press is bad press, so I took the opportunity to share that not only has Frankie taught me not to judge, but she has taught me many lessons which I’ll be sharing in my upcoming new book, Through Frankie’s Eyes: One Woman’s Journey to Her Authentic Self and the Dog on Wheels Who Led the Way. I invited them to check out my website and sign up for updates on when the book will be released.

So what began as what I initially thought as a bad thing– judging– being hurt– turn it upside down, and it became a beautiful opportunity in so many ways. Thank you Everyone Loves A Dachshund for this most unexpected, but welcome opportunity.

Meet Digby a Dachshund with IVDD Inspired by Frankie the Walk ‘N Roll Dog

Digby’s Mom, Emily emailed me today asking if she would be upset if she shared a video she made of her dachshund, Digby who also has IVDD to help bring positive awareness to this disease to those in the UK where she and Digby live. She told me she used the same music I did in my video about Frankie, but was so inspired by Frankie that she wants to do to help IVDD dogs in the UK. Emily told me she didn’t want me to be upset that the video is similar to mine about Frankie’s and if I was, she wouldn’t share it. Stay tuned to end of post for touching video of Digby.

I was so touched about her concern, but I was thrilled that she wanted to do what she could to help bring more awareness to this disease that is often looked at as a death sentence for dogs. It is so far from that. I told her I was honored she did something similar and by doing so and sharing with those she knows, together we can help save even more dogs with diagnoses with IVDD. Now that is a beautiful thing.

So I asked Emily to send the video on over and I’ll share with my readers and Frankie’s fans. So check out Digby, living a quality life despite an IVDD diagnoses. Could he be any happier?  Thank you, Emily and Digby for this video that will be another extension of our work that will no doubt save more lives. Blessings! Blessings! Blessings!

Special Needs Pet Feature: Squeaky

Note:  Be sure to read all the way to end and then listen to a special audio recording. Squeaky’s mom, Sussie wrote to me about Squeaky’s first time in wheels and it was so cute I asked if I could record and share with you, my readers.

What is your pet’s name?

Squeaky. Actually his name is Colt. But he gets these high pitched squeaky whines when he wants something. I started out saying to him “Thats my squeaky boy” but he seemed to like being called Squeaky. The only time I call him Colt is when he is in trouble. Kinda like when your mother called you by your full name. Oh boy…you knew you were in for it. LOL

How old is your pet?

5

Where did you get your pet?

He was a rescue. He was going to be put down.

What is your pet’s physical challenge?

He is down in the back and it is inoperable (IVDD). Very powerful from the mid section forward though. Since I got him, he has regained a tiny bit of movement in the back. But not enough to stand.

What is your pet’s favorite thing to do?

Chew on rawhide bones. Bark. Be held. Explore. Sleep.

What is your pet’s favorite thing to eat? u

um…what doesn’t he like to eat. LOL

What do you love most about your pet?

His attitude. He has never been bothered by the fact that he can’t walk. He’s always happy.

What has your pet most taught you?

Don’t worry…be happy.

Anything else you’d like to share?

Thank you to Eddie’s Wheels for making a perfectly custom made cart. It fits him like a glove! Because of them, Squeaky has wings to fly.

Listen to audio of Squeaky trying out his wheels for the first time!!

My life changed for the better and my heart grew ten times it size when my dog, Frankie ruptured a disk and ended up in a doggie wheelchair.  That may sound odd, but it lead me to a calling that has brought me so much joy.

I love being an advocate for pets with special neeeds educating others that disabled pets are just as lovable as any other pet. I also feel so blessed to help kids of all ages see their challenges in a positive way through Frankie’s example. Frankie is an incredbile gift not only in my life, but she has helped thousands of children through the book series about her, as well as the visits we do to schools in WI and schools across the US and Canada via Skype.

Sharing other pets with special needs expands on the message that all animals deserve a chance. Sharing these pets helps to spread a positive message and every time I meet a new special needs pet I feel my heart grow even bigger.  I hope it does the same for you and you pass on the love.
