Meet Rhy. Soon to be Rolling on Wheels!

Meet Rhy. Soon to be Rolling on Wheels!
Rhy

Seems Rhy is tired of being measured and just wants to get things over with so her new wheels can be built! What a great shot her owner caught of her yawning, don’t you think? It wasn’t even planned!

But soon enough, she will indeed be rolling. The Frankie Wheelchair Fund is happy to provide the funds for a “front wheel” drive cart for this pretty, little girl. Rhy makes the 56th dog we’ve helped become mobile.

She has a deformed front leg and with her advancing age, she simply can’t get around anymore or go for walks, which she loves.

But soon enough, this pretty snowflake will be rolling down the sidewalk. Stay tuned!

Made with Love. Bandanas for Dogs with Special Needs

Made with Love. Bandanas for Dogs with Special Needs

I think these new bandanas that Catherine from Blankets in Bloom has come up with is a wonderful idea.  So much so, I had to order one for Gidget and share with you today.

Catherine loves to help dogs in her own special way by using her talent of sewing.

Wanting to help dogs with special needs she came up with the idea of a bandana that states a dogs special need if they have one to help alert others when out in public.

I know personally, for me, I worry that kids may approach Gidget’s back with rough hands or try to pick her up.  With a bad back, I have to be careful about that with her.

I’ve also been concerned since she has had seizures and that she may have an episode while out in public, that people will give her the space she needs.

So I loved the idea of stating these special needs on a bandana when Catherine emailed me and asked me what I thought.

It’s also another way in which I can educate others about Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) spreading awareness of the options available.  And that there are options for dogs with seizures too.

The option is great if you have a dog that is blind or deaf also as that is hard to know when you approach a dog.

Of course, if you don’t have a dog with special needs, you can also just get a fun, snazzy bandana with your dogs name on it, in whatever colors you like.  Catherine will custom make one for you.

You’ve Just Got to Meet Chelsea!

chelsea

Chelsea is only two years old. This is the first time since being born that she is standing upright.

While her mom was pregnant with her she had parvovirus which caused Chelsea to be born with Cerebellar Hypoplasia (CH)- a condition in which parts of the cerebellum have not completely developed. The cerebellum makes up a large part of the brain, lying under the cerebrum and toward the back, above and behind the brainstem.)

Because of CH she is not able to stand upright to get around. But now she can because of being granted a wheelchair through The Frankie Wheelchair Fund.

Andrea, her angel here on earth, adopted her about a month ago from the humane society, where Andrea is a volunteer. Chelsea was found with over 60 other dogs and likely inbreeding of many of the dogs with Chelsea having had several litters of pups herself already.

Andrea told me that every day she is practicing with Chelsea to help her to learn to roll in her wheels. She said that she can tell that Chelsea is so curious and happy to be up and exploring.

It will take time as Chelsea has to build up her muscles which never had a chance to do so before this.  But now she has someone in her life who is relishing in caring for her and helping her be the best dog she can possibly be.

Chelsea is  taking little steps at a time and Andrea said she seems to be enjoying all the new smells that come from being able to explore higher up.

I don’t know about you, but I really do think Chelsea is smiling and thanking her lucky stars for finding her way to Andrea!
