What Do Ferrari’s and a Bergamasco Dog Have in Common?

IMG_1709 1200Okay, so maybe your thinking, “What’s a Bergamasco dog?” as you’ve likely heard of a Ferrari.  Well, that is exactly what I was asking last night when I saw this dog while we watched the Ferrari’s come into our small town from Road America race track to celebrate their 50th year anniversary.  But I was asking, “What kind of dog is  that?”

To be more exact, she is a Bergamasco Sheep Dog or also referred to as Shepherd.  So what does this sheep dog and a Ferrari have in common you might wonder?  Well, they are both originally from Italy. It seems the theme of our mostly prominent German village turned Italian for the night.

When I saw this dog sashay past John and I, and believe me, with her long locks of what appear as dreadlocks, walk by, she sashayed. It was an awesome site. I had to know more about her breed.

Luckily the parade of Ferrari’s had just ended or I would have never seen them because I was more enthralled in learning about this unique looking dog.  Ben, the dog’s owner, was more than happy to indulge me and tell me about her.

Her name is Althea (pronounced al-THEE-ah). Her breeder is Silver Pastori out of Pennsylvania. Her coat is not soft to the touch, but it is totally intriguing to look at and try and figure out how it does what it does.  Because I want to get this right here is some information from Silver Pastori website about Bergamasco’s coats:

“The Bergamasco’s coat is made up of hair, not fur and is considered to be non-shedding. I would like to make it clear that the Bergamasco hair does not cord, (cording is the twisting of hairs together to create a spiral strand). The Bergamasco coat is very different, in that the strands of hair weave together creating flat layers of hair, (called flocks). The definition of a flock is a tuft or lock of wool or hair. Each flock of hair ranges in width anywhere from an inch and half to three inches wide.”

Their coat of which you see Althea’s in the photo does not fully develop until they are three years old according to Silver Pastori’s website information.

IMG_1708 1200The best part I loved about Althea besides her stunning looks?  She is so sweet.   Normally shy, Ben told me, she cozied up next to me so I could pet her. He said she does not always do that so Ben said she must have sensed I’m a big dog lover.  Right on, Althea!  I am. What a joy it was to meet her and learn more about her.  And oh yes, of course, Ben too.  We chuckled as I realized a few moments into our conversation I had never asked his name. And so it goes, how dog’s open our world to meeting others, and I was happy to meet Ben as well.

So for those of you who still may be interested in seeing a photo of a Ferrari, ok, here is one I took last evening. But I must say it still will never compare to the beauty and love of a dog…. well, at least in my mind, that is.

Market Bike. One of the Joy’s of My Life.

market bike 1200I love riding my bike to the Farmer’s Market when I’m not there with my own booth selling my books.

Today was a perfect morning to hop on my bike and make the little over a mile jaunt.  I got so caught up in all the goodies that I realized as I was ready to head home I didn’t have room for my purse to fit back into the back basket!  And to top it off, I had to put the three red velvet cupcakes I bought across the street at the deli in my purse, as I ran out of room!

Fresh cut flowers, cherry tomatoes, large beefy tomato, home made pasta and salsa sauce, freshly picked radishes, spinach, and lettuce, three beautiful photography cards, hand sewn eye glass case (so I hopefully won’t keep losing my glasses!)  and a 6-inch pot of arugula and cilantro.

It was a delicate, slow ride home– but I made it!  As for the red velvet cupcakes– well, they too made it, just a little smooshed is all, which I’m sure won’t affect the delicious taste.

As much as I missed having Joie with me today, it was a good thing I didn’t because she might have had to hitch a ride with someone else!  And I also got to have a little cuddle time with a dear four legged friend of mine, Baci.  Check out my Facebook page to see our sweet photo his mom, Jodee, took of us.

My New Love Dog on Wheels Meets the Thein Family– Frankie Fan’s and Now Joie Fan’s.

As you all know, I’ve had so many blessings because of my work with Frankie.  People I would have never met, but now know because of my little love dog on wheels.

Three years ago I had the honor of meeting the kindest family. They were visiting our small village staying at the big resort in our town, the Osthoff.  They ventured off to the small shops one day. It was there that eight year old Cameron spotted the book about Frankie which the local shop, CottageWood, carried. It was perfect because he happens to adore dachshunds.

As he carried the book proudly in his arms he ran into my dear friend, Victoria who happened to be the manager of the shop at the time, along with the small complex of a grocery store and coffee shop.  She saw the book Cameron was carrying and said, “I just happen to know the author of that book.  I can’t promise anything, but just maybe I could see if she and Frankie could come meet you.”

These are the moments in life that sometimes feel unsure, but then turn out to be something that stays in your heart always.  Frankie and I ventured down to the shop and it was hard not to fall head over heels in love with the sweet little boy who was shy, but excited to meet his new hero of the book he just got.  As it would also turn out a TV station from the neighboring big city wanted to do a story about Frankie.  We arranged it that Cameron and his parents could be part of the interview.  A lovely and beautiful memory was made… but most importantly, a friendship began.

They visited again the following year and Frankie and Cameron were united once again… and little did we know for the last time. They grieved the loss of Frankie, along with so many Frankie fans.  But they were so happy to hear when Joie came into my life. Their third annual trip was in the making to once again visit our village this year, so they emailed to see if they could meet Joie.

We spent a lovely morning with Cameron grinning from ear to ear, happy to meet his new pal, Joie, and also Kylie. Dog stories flew left and right and my heart melted for the love of these special people and sweet son for their love of not only Frankie, but now Joie too (and of course, Kylie).

I couldn’t help but give the big stuffed Frankie toy I had gotten from “Build-A-Bear” to Cameron. I know he will take the best care of it and will add to his collection of stuffed toys who are no doubt very well loved.

I’ve had many grateful moments in my life because of Frankie and I begin them again with Joie… and the Thein family I count among those treasured moments.
